  • Hard work pays off for North East Surrey Short Stay School students in this year’s exams

    Thu 21 Aug 2025 N. Elliott

The North East Surrey Short Stay School (NESSSS) is pleased to share the 2025 GCSE results.

Headteacher Nick Elliott said: “Success at NESSSS doesn’t always look the same as it might elsewhere. For some of our students, the achievement is simply sitting an exam, attending consistently, or completing coursework against the odds. Every grade earned this summer reflects determination, resilience, and the commitment of staff who support, challenge and believe in our young people.”

Overall, results were positive, with strong performances across a number of subject areas. Staff were particularly proud of the progress students made from their individual starting points, as well as the increased exam attendance and engagement compared with previous years.

“These outcomes show what’s possible when students feel supported and believed in,” Mr Elliott added. “We’re proud of every single one of them.”

    Key Highlights from 2025

    • 100% of students achieved a qualification in English
    • 88% achieved a qualification in Maths
    • 38% achieved Level 2 qualifications in both Maths and English – our strongest figure to date
    • Students sat an average of 6 qualifications each, with 58% of subjects on target and 27% above target

Deputy Headteacher Dan Gunn commented, “Qualifications matter, but so does the journey to get there. These results are built on hundreds of small steps forward. Our students have shown what’s possible when ambition is met with consistency, and when staff believe in every child. We are proud of the progress they’ve made – both in their learning and in themselves.” River said of his results, “I’m so pleased, I’d never have got this had I stayed in my mainstream school.  I’m so happy.  Thank you all so much for what you have done for me.”

  • Goodbye Year 11

    Fri 16 Jun 2023 N. Elliott

Saying goodbye to any Year 11 cohort is always bittersweet.  After spending so much time working with the children and building relationships, it is almost with parental pride that we watch them grow from children in to young men and women.  I have been particularly struck with this current cohort, many of whom have had to overcome so much to make it to, and then get through, their exams.

Whatever the future hold for our current cohort, I am filled with hope and pride.  I have been impressed with their hard work, resilience and determination to succeed through the exams period and I will be eternally thankful for their gratitude and respect.

So I would like to wish Year 11 well, whatever their future endeavours and hope that they remember their time with us with fondness.

    Mr. Elliott

  • Charity News!

    Wed 14 Jun 2023 K Black

NESSSS likes to support local charities and we use charity events each term to raise as much as we can.  During the Hersham Christmas Fayre this year, the students were able to raise money for their chosen Charities.

Walton Charities are a local organisation helping the disadvantaged in the Elmbridge area.  The picture below shows their appreciation for the efforts of our students.

A huge thank you for all the students that took part, we know you enjoyed organising the event, it's just fantastic that we were all able to "give back" as well!

  • Walton Firs - May 2023

    Thu 18 May 2023 C Sacha

Thursday 18th May was one to remember for our NESSSS students as they made their annual trip to Walton Firs outdoor activity centre.  This trip was open to all years (except for those Year 11s stuck in exams of course!) The students were excellent and took part in a variety of activities such as rifle shooting and high ropes courses.

It was brilliant to see the students enjoying themselves, with several commenting that they had never been on a school trip before!

A huge thank you to all the staff that took part and we will all look forward to our trip to the seaside in July!

  • Cracking Coronation

    Fri 05 May 2023 C Sacha

The students and staff have been building towards the King's Coronation this week.  The students made food for the occasion, including coronation chicken baps and royal fairy cakes.  Activities included a quiz surrounding the ascension and traditional games such as bingo and croquet.

Overall, a brilliant afternoon, superbly organised by Miss Sacha and Mrs Black

Well done all, enjoy the weekend!

  • Fantastic Food Exam!

    Wed 08 Mar 2023 C Sacha

A fantastic effort from our Hersham cohort today completing their practical examination in BTEC Home Cooking Skills.  Each pupil showcased their skills planning and preparing a two-course home cooked meal in an hour and a half.  They all showed perseverance and integrity throughout and produced some excellent food.

I'm very proud of them and what they have achieved this year so far.

well done Year 11, Keep it up!
