  • Information regarding Strike Action

    Fri 27 Jan 2023 N. Elliott

The following information has been shared with parents regarding the forthcoming NEU strike action:

"You may be aware from media coverage that The National Education Union (NEU) have declared strike action, which will take place on:

    ●    Wednesday 1st February 2023
    ●    Thursday 2nd March 2023
    ●    Wednesday 15th March 2023
    ●    Thursday 16th March 2023

The strike is happening because of a national dispute between the unions and the government over teachers’ pay, and not because of any issues at our school.

I’m getting in touch to confirm that North East Surrey Short Stay School will be open as usual on the above dates. Please send your child in as normal.

If the situation changes and we are compelled to close the school due to staff shortages, we will be in touch. If you do not hear from us (about this matter) again, school will remain open as normal."

If anyone has any further question regarding this, please contact reception at the relevant site to your child.

  • NESSSS reach new heights

    Mon 23 Jan 2023 D Gunn

On Monday 23rd January, all pupils from the Hersham site travelled down to the Excel centre for an afternoons activity on the climbing wall. After harnessing up, our pupils split into two groups and worked on a variety of different wall routes on the 12.5 metre high wall. With the vast majority of pupils making it all the way to the top and taking on some very challenging routes, it was great to see our pupils taking themselves out of their comfort zones. There were 1v1 races to the top and the opportunity to races against the clock on one wall, with the fastest time being just 10 seconds! Even the staff joined in with Mr Gunn and Mr Akar taking to the wall to show the students how not to do it. A brilliant afternoon had by all.

    Happy New Year!

The school will be open for students from 9am on Wednesday 3rd January 2023.  We are expecting all students to attend in full school uniform.

Those who attend vocational provision, should have been contacted by your transport services to make sure you are aware of the required days and times.  Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have not heard anything at this stage.

We are all looking forward to seeing you next week in preparation for another successful year!

  • Restart-a-Heart

    Tue 11 Oct 2022 A Sutton-Hall

Colin McFarlane from the South East Coast Ambulance Service came into the school on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th November 2022.  He taught the children emergency first aid.  The students engaged well and we are proud that they all achieved their certificates of participation.  The course itself covered quite a few areas, including CPR and what to do when someone is choking.

Well done to everyone and a big thanks to Colin!

  • A Life well lived

Fri 09 Sep 2022 Mr Elliott

The North East Surrey Short Stay School was saddened to hear of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II yesterday afternoon.

As a show of respect, tutors showed the following presentation to their tutees today, to help them to understand her achievements and just why she was so respected and beloved by all.

  • GCSE results 2022

    Thu 25 Aug 2022 N Elliott

On Thursday 25th August, Year 11 students were invited to collect their GCSE results from school.  Mr Elliott said,

"The students attending NESSSS often have barriers which prevent them from achieving as well as students in mainstream school.  This was compounded by the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic AND changes in school structures and leadership at NESSSS.  Despite all of this, NESSSS students produced a bumper set of results which will give them what they need to progress in their post-16 aspirations.  It is difficult to express just how grateful I am to the staff at NESSSS for all of their efforts and hope that the students go on to live their lives through the values which we have embedded within them."

A notable result was Kacper T, who not only achieved all of his target grades but also managed to score two grades beyond his target to achieve a level 5 in English.  Sam H was our highest achieving student, passing 10 qualifications, with Alisha B gaining 7.  Overall 59% of students achieved their target grades or better and 85% managed to gain qualifications in English and maths.

Needless to say, we are extremely proud of all our students and wish them well in their next steps.

  • High Sheriff Rewards 'The boss'

Tue 25 Jan 2022 Mr Elliott

Dr Julie Llewellyn, High Sheriff of Surrey visited NESSSS on Tuesday 25th January to tour the facilities on our Staines site.  The office of High Sheriff dates back to 1066 and is appointed by The Queen.  In the past, the post has been linked with keeping law and order, collecting taxes and even commanding military forces!  Nowadays, the role does not have to worry about such risks and the current theme of the High Sheriff is "every child included" - this looks to support the police and judiciary by supporting those children at risk of permanent exclusion, a philosophy very much in line with our own!

Dr Llewellyn went in to lessons, spoke with students and staff and inspected some of the improvements to the site in recent times.  She was toured by one of our students, Nick and "The Boss" (otherwise known as Mrs Razey).  At the end of the tour, we were proud that Dr Llewellyn had decided to award Mrs Razey for her service to the school, something that was a surprise to Mrs Razey herself!

    Mrs Razey said,

"I don't know what to say!  I am so proud of everything the students do here every day.  Everyone has just been amazing this year and the changes that the school has been through is making a real difference.  thank you to everyone for everything you are doing."

The visit provided a much needed boost to both students and staff who were grateful for her time and understanding during her visit.  We would like to thank Dr Llewellyn for her time and remind readers that our doors are always open for any friends of NESSSS who would like to visit and see what we do here.
